The slap hit so hard my vision blurred for a second.

PART 4
Dominic didn’t answer.
He simply stared at the laptop as if refusing to blink could erase what was on the screen.
The detective began scrolling through message after message.
There were hundreds.
Photos.
Travel reservations.
Bank transfers.
Conversations discussing how Dominic planned to leave me once enough money had been moved into accounts his mother controlled.
One message stopped everyone.
“Once Audrey signs the refinancing papers, the house will finally be ours.”
The detective looked up.
“Did you ever sign those documents?”
“No.”
“I refused after noticing several numbers had been changed.”
Victoria’s face tightened.
“It was just paperwork.”
The detective shook his head.
“No, ma’am. It appears to be attempted fraud.”

Another officer stepped in carrying a printed report.
“We confirmed multiple transfers from the victim’s business account into accounts belonging to Victoria and Natalie.”
Natalie burst into tears.
“I only used the card because Dominic said Audrey wouldn’t notice.”
I looked at her.
“You spent over forty thousand dollars.”
She lowered her eyes.
“I thought he’d replace it.”
Dominic finally exploded.
“This is your fault!”
He pointed at his mother.
“You said nobody would ever question family!”
Victoria fired back instantly.
“You were the one cheating and hitting your wife!”
Within seconds they were accusing each other of everything they had done over the last two years.
The officers listened quietly.
No one needed to interrogate them anymore.
They were supplying the evidence themselves.
One detective approached Dominic.
“You’re under arrest on suspicion of domestic assault, financial fraud, and related offenses.”
Another officer informed Victoria and Natalie that they were also being taken in for questioning regarding forged invoices and stolen funds.
As handcuffs clicked into place, Dominic looked at me with desperate anger.
“You planned this.”
I met his eyes without raising my voice.
“No.”
“I documented it.”
They escorted the three of them toward the front door.
Neighbors had gathered outside after seeing the police cars.
Nobody cheered.
Nobody clapped.
They simply watched the family that had always acted superior walk quietly into separate patrol vehicles.
My lawyer arrived a few minutes later carrying one final envelope.
Inside was the court order confirming that Dominic had no legal claim to the house.
The detective handed me my keys after the officers finished processing the scene.
“I think these belong with you.”
I closed the front door behind them and stood alone in the dining room.
The silver serving tray still rested in the middle of the table.
The photographs had been collected as evidence.
The flash drive was gone.
Only the polished lid remained.
I picked it up, carried it back into the kitchen, and placed it inside the cabinet.
For the first time in years, I wasn’t preparing dinner for people who wanted obedience.
I was finally home in a house that truly belonged to me.
