PART 4
By the time we reached the private terminal, Derek’s plane had been stopped at the runway.
Federal marshals escorted him back inside while airport employees watched in stunned silence.
He looked exhausted instead of angry.
The confidence he always carried had disappeared.
Sarah placed the settlement agreement on the table.
“You’ve lied enough.”
He didn’t deny signing it.
He only asked one question.
“Did Melissa call you?”
“No,” Sarah answered.
“Brittany did us that favor.”
For several long seconds Derek stared at the papers.
Then he finally told the truth.
Years before we met, he and Melissa had dated in Reno.
When she became pregnant, he panicked.
He offered money instead of commitment.

She refused at first, but eventually accepted support for their son because she had no other choice.
He kept the child hidden from everyone, including me.
When Brittany accidentally discovered the payments while organizing company finances, she realized she had leverage.
She demanded promotions, expensive gifts, vacations, and eventually a relationship.
Every time Derek tried to end it, she threatened to expose everything.
When he told Brittany that he was leaving her for good because our daughter would soon be born, she exploded.
She chose the one target she believed would hurt me the most.
Our baby’s car seat.
She wanted me terrified before she wanted me divorced.
Sarah quietly closed the folder.
“The affair explains the motive.”
“The destruction explains the charges.”
“The blackmail explains the money.”
“But attacking property prepared for an unborn child makes this far more serious.”
Brittany was arrested two days later in a motel outside Reno.
She confessed after detectives recovered the tire iron, the knife, and the clothes stained with red paint.
She admitted she had taken the smiling photographs because she wanted me to see them.
She never imagined the second security camera existed.
Melissa agreed to cooperate fully.
She had never known Derek was also involved with Brittany.
Her only concern had always been raising her son.
The court ordered Derek to continue supporting his child while separate civil lawsuits moved forward.
Brittany accepted a plea agreement that included restitution, probation, and mandatory counseling instead of a lengthy trial because it was her first felony conviction.
My divorce was finalized before my daughter was born.
I kept the house.
I kept my peace.
Most importantly, I kept every promise I had whispered to my little girl that day in the parking garage.
A month later I carried her safely out of the hospital.
Before fastening her into a brand-new car seat, I paused for a moment.
I brushed my fingers across the secure straps.
She looked up at me with calm blue eyes.
“You really are safe now,” I whispered.
This time, I knew it was true.
