More than two hundred mourners stood frozen where they were.

PART 4
Rose’s letter was only two pages long.
She knew she did not have much time.
“My dearest Dad,” it began.
“If you’re reading this, Arthur has already shown everyone exactly who he is.”
“I didn’t leave this for revenge.”
“I left it because my daughters deserve the truth.”
She explained that Arthur had been involved with another woman for nearly a year.
When she confronted him, he demanded that she transfer her life insurance policy and sign over several investments.
She refused.
After that, his behavior became colder every week.
He never struck her, but he constantly threatened to leave with everything if she exposed the affair.
Rose began documenting every conversation.
The flash drive contained security footage from their home office, copies of financial records, text messages, and videos she secretly recorded with her phone.
There was even footage of Arthur coaching his fiancée about pretending they had only recently met.
The recordings stretched back months before Rose became ill.
The detectives reviewed every file.
Within days, Arthur became the target of a fraud investigation involving forged insurance documents and financial deception.
While the investigation continued, the family court immediately suspended any custody rights he still claimed.
The girls never had to fear foster care again.
I officially became their legal guardian.
Arthur still insisted he had done nothing wrong.
Even after relatives stopped answering his calls.
Even after his fiancée learned about the recordings.
She didn’t wait for the wedding.
The ceremony was canceled two days before guests were supposed to arrive.
The venue refunded part of the deposit.

The florist threw away hundreds of white roses.
Arthur arrived alone and found locked doors instead of a celebration.
His fiancée had left behind only a short note.
“I can forgive many things.”
“But I won’t marry a man who abandons his own children before their mother’s grave is dry.”
Months later, the criminal case forced Arthur to repay thousands of dollars connected to the fraudulent insurance filings.
His reputation collapsed.
Most of the people who had once called themselves friends quietly disappeared.
Life slowly became peaceful again.
Lucy framed one page from her mother’s journal.
Rachel planted white lilies beneath the oak tree in our backyard.
April finally laughed the way children are supposed to laugh.
Every Sunday evening, we sat together on the porch and read one chapter from Rose’s favorite books.
She was gone.
But her love had never left that family.
On the first anniversary of her funeral, the girls placed fresh white lilies beside her headstone.
I stood behind them in silence.
The wind gently turned the ribbon around the bouquet.
Just before we walked away, Lucy smiled toward the sky and whispered,
“We kept your promise, Mom.”
And somehow, standing beside those same white lilies that had surrounded her funeral, I felt she already knew.
