PART 4
We reached Vale Tower just before dawn.
For the first time in my life, I entered through the underground garage instead of the front entrance.
The key Dominic gave me opened a steel security door marked B3.
Behind it was not a vault full of money.
It was a room filled with records.
Shelves stretched from floor to ceiling.
Every box carried a name.
Politicians.
Judges.
Business rivals.
Police officers.
Journalists.
My grandfather had collected decades of blackmail.
In the center of the room sat another safe.
Inside were hundreds of signed orders.
Among them was one document that froze me.

It carried my name.
The date was four years earlier.
Its title read: SUCCESSION PROTOCOL.
If I ever chose love over the family business, I was to be removed permanently.
Maya had never been the target.
I had.
She and the children were leverage.
The moment I understood, the elevator doors opened behind us.
Salvatore entered alone.
He looked tired for the first time in my life.
“You were always too sentimental,” he said.
“You would have destroyed everything your father died protecting.”
“He died because of you,” I replied quietly.
For a brief second, his eyes revealed the truth.
He never denied it.
Instead, he reached into his coat.
I expected a weapon.
He removed a faded photograph.
It showed my father holding me as a child beside Lake Michigan.
“I built this empire for you.”
“You built a prison,” I answered.
Sirens echoed above us.
Dominic had done exactly what he promised.
Before disappearing, he had anonymously delivered every file to federal investigators.
The building was surrounded.
Salvatore looked toward the ceiling and smiled sadly.
“So this is how it ends.”
He placed the old photograph back inside the safe.
When armed agents entered the room, he offered no resistance.
As they led him away, he stopped beside the stroller.
The three children looked back without fear.
“They have your eyes,” he whispered.
“They deserve a better name than Vale.”
He walked away without another word.
Weeks later, the empire was dismantled piece by piece.
The evidence hidden beneath the tower destroyed everything my grandfather had spent fifty years building.
Dominic survived his injuries.
He pleaded guilty to every crime he had committed and testified against the remaining members of the organization.
He never asked me for forgiveness.
Maya and I didn’t try to erase the past.
Some wounds could never disappear.
Instead, we chose to build something honest from what remained.
Camille quietly ended our engagement after learning the truth.
She deserved a life untouched by my family’s darkness.
Months later, Maya and I returned to Grant Park with the children.
The same little girl laughed as another pigeon wandered across the grass.
She reached for my hand just as she had in the tunnel.
This time, I didn’t let go.
I looked into those pale gray eyes that matched my own and realized they no longer reminded me of the family I had escaped.
They reminded me of the family I had finally found.
